HIV & STD Testing Blood Specimens
Some STDs, such as HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis, infect the blood stream and are tested primarily in blood. In some cases urine or cells collected from a mouth can be used. Blood samples are most accurate in testing for these infections.
Cultures, Urine & Microscope Wet Mounts
Some STDs infect isolated local areas of the body such as the penis, vagina, throat, anus and eye. STD cultures can be collected from these locations to help diagnose STDs. Urine can also be collected for certain STD tests. If left untreated, local STD infections can spread to other parts of the body, such as to the testicles and uterus, and possibly cause complications that may be harder to treat.
