Syphilis Testing Fact Sheet

You can have Syphilis without symptoms!

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection passed through unsafe sex.

Symptoms of Syphilis can include:

• Painless sores on the penis, vulva, mouth or anus that heal within a few weeks
• Rash, often on the hands, feet or torso, appears within weeks to months
• Late stage Syphilis can cause nerve problems, dementia and blindness

Who Should Test for Syphilis?

If you have any of these symptoms after sexual contact with a partner you should test for Syphilis
If you've had unsafe sex with partners who's sexual past is unknown you should test for Syphilis
If you have any doubts after sex, even if you have NO symptoms, you should test for Syphilis

Testing for Syphilis is done with a simple blodd test

Testing for Syphilis is most accurate1 month or longer after sexual contact. However, Syphilis has been detected as early as 2 weeks after becoming infected, in some cases.
